Video Premiere: Bob Hillman “Big Sur”

March 17, 2016

With Lost Soul , Bob Hillman returns for his first album in a decade. The Plimsouls’ Peter Case produced the record which also features Joseph Arthur on guitar, loops, and piano, drummer Danny Frankel (Lou Reed, kd lang), keyboardist Danny McGough (Tom Waits, Social Distortion) and bassist Jonny Flaugher (Ryan Adams, Joshua Radin). After earning praise for his three prior albums, Hillman stepped away from the limelight for some time until a series of conversations with Case spurred him to return. Hillman explains, “When Peter agreed to produce Lost Soul, I saw it as an opportunity to work with someone who could take my songs to places I could never have thought of on my own. My third album If You Lived Here You’d Be Home (2006) was the ultimate distillation of the sound I had in my head, complete with George Harrison-esque guitar hooks, keyboard pads, and close harmonies. There’s nothing wrong with those things—I love those things—but if I was going to record again, I wanted to do something different.” Lost Soul will be released on March 25 and Hillman will support the record with a national tour opening on March 24.

Today we premiere the video for “Big Sur,” the first single from Lost Soul . Hillman tells Relix, “‘Big Sur’ is basically a fantasy: I dream of stepping out of my complicated life and into a more peaceful reality. The settings are informed by my personal experience in Andrew Molera and Julia Pfeifer Burns State Parks, and Pfeifer Beach. Obviously, the subject matter lends itself to video. For less than $100 – the price of a tank of gas and breakfast for three at Denny’s – we produced a perfectly decent piece of work and had a lot of fun in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.”
