Umphrey’s McGee’s Ryan Stasik Gives Wide-Ranging Interview on Podcast

CBS Sports writer and Relix contributer Matt Norlander has launched a new podcast series entitled Records and Riffs featuring various musings on the music world. For the seventh episode, Norlander chatted with Umphrey’s McGee bassist Ryan Stasik in what could be his most wide-ranging interview to date.

Stasik dishes on a variety of topics including the origins of the band, their improvisational style and the potential growth for Umphrey’s McGee. “I would never say anybody is taking the torch from Phish,” the bassist said, referring to the Vermont quartet as “the apex.” He mentions he recently took his daughter to her first Phish show in Atlanta and said that he’s “honored” to be mentioned in that company.

As for Umphrey’s McGee’s ascension into the arena rock circuit, Stasik is doubtful, citing the current touring model. “I don’t know if concerts will ever become what they were in the 80s,” he said, adding that the UM fanbase enjoys the intimacy and interaction that the group has with them in their current state.
