Umphrey’s McGee Mashups, Ranked

Rob Slater on October 30, 2015

This weekend, Umphrey’s McGee will probably not present their latest edition of mashups. While this signals the end of the mashup run, at least for now, let’s take a look back at the good, the bad and the somewhat ugly of the band’s mashup history. Mashups are an art form, one the band has perfected over the years since their debut in 2008, but what the hell, let’s rank ’em anyway.

Deep breath. Here we go.

Gold Standard

Frankie Zombie

It takes balls to close a Halloween show with a mashup, but “Frankie Zombie” closed out the Milwaukee ’12 run in style and has since become one of their best mashups to drop into in the middle of a fairly aggressive, metal-based jam.

Life During Exodus

2012 was a good year for mashups, as another gem emerged from Milwaukee in the form of this Marley/Talking Heads/Zappa mash.

In the Puppet Kitchen

Original songs can’t be easy to mashup, at least compared to covers, which is what makes “In the Puppet Kitchen” so unique and accomplished. It also brought the house down at one of the most memorable Halloween runs in the band’s history.

Come As Your Kids

Here is more from “one of the most memorable Halloween runs in the band’s history.” Nirvana and MGMT were made for each other.

Land of Wappy

Combining one of Umphrey’s McGee’s best live tunes with Metallica and Genesis. “Land of Wappy” can do no wrong. Speaking of, let’s bust that one out sometime soon.

Sweet Sunglasses

Nothing like slamming together a couple of classic 80s tunes and one of the best wannabe-80s cover bands of the 2000s. Eurythmics, Corey Hart and MGMT were all made for each other.

1901 Jump

The “Fuck You” at the end is even better than Cinninger’s costume in St. Louis in 2010.

Electric Avenue to Hell

That moment when you think you’re just going to get a “Triple Wide” encore.

Strangletage

I’m a sucker for “Stranglehold”‘s guitar riff. Sorry. Actually, I’m not sorry.

Best of the Rest

Umphrey’s has a lot of creative mashups, and here are some more of them. They’re not the best, but they’re still really damn good.

Nemo’s Fat Bottomed Good Times

The Way You Rule the World

National Loser Anthem, Tonight

Nineteen Hundred and Eight-Five Wellwishing

Another Brick in the Wall/Thriller

Don’t Fear the Doves, Snucka

Bulls on the Bus

Papa Can Change a Blurred Stone

Phil’s 7 Nation Money Farm

Bottom Eleven

There are no bad ideas in this world, but these aren’t the best.

No Woman Let It Be

Come Closer

Addicted to Kiss

November Walk

Sad Gorillaz

Walk This Sweet Funk Emotion

AC/DC & Black Sabbath

Don’t Stop Until Crosstown Traffic

Night Gambler

Push the Booth Deeper

Bittersweet Haji

(Note: “Haji” is church. It doesn’t need to be Verve’d ever.)
