Ultra Runner Karl Meltzer Reveals His Favorite Grateful Dead Show to Listen to While Hiking

September 29, 2016

Last week we told you about Karl Meltzer, the ultra runner who hiked the entire Appalachian Trail spanning more than 2,000 miles. What made Meltzer’s story even more interesting is that he credited the likes of the Dead, Phish and Strangefolk as those bands who kept him sane along the treacherous journey.

In a Reddit AMA yesterday, we got a glimpse of what exactly Meltzer was listening to as a fan asked him what Dead show he liked to use to soundtrack his hike the most. He responded with “Winterland 1974.” While the Dead played the San Francisco arena eight times in ’74, surely Meltzer had plenty of time to listen to all of them along his journey. The February 24, 1974 show was also immortalized as Dick’s Picks Vol. 13 and of course the final five shows of the run encapsulated The Grateful Dead Movie

Watch some highlights from that run below.
