Today in 2008, LeRoi Moore Played His Final Show

June 28, 2017

Today in 2008, Dave Matthews Band stepped on stage in Bristow, VA not knowing that it’d be the final show they’d play with founding saxophonist LeRoi Moore. Two days later, Moore was injured in an ATV accident on his farm outside of Charlottesville. Moore died on August 19 from complications of the injuries suffered from the accident.

Moore’s last show eerily included a number of his live staples (the band would later release the show as Live Trax Vol. 14) like “The Dreaming Tree,” “Ants Marching,” “So Much to Say” and “Too Much” as well as a “Rapunzel” in the encore. Also in that night’s setlist was a debut of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer,” the first of 43 times the band would play the song and one that leaned heavily on Moore’s signature baritone sax sound.

Watch that performance below.
