Today in 2000, Phish Reprised “Chalk Dust Torture”

July 11, 2017

The “Chalk Dust Torture Reprise” has only been played twice in Phish’s history, in 1994 and seventeen years ago today when Phish capped off a particularly playful night at Deer Creek.

Yes, today is the anniversary of the famed “Moby Dick” show, where Phish weaved in and out of the Led Zeppelin tune throughout the entire second set, giving it a theme of its very own and marking the first appearance of the song since 1997.

The theme continued out of the finishing “First Tube,” where the group delved into “Moby Dick” again before delivering a much rarer gem, the “Chalk Dust Torture Reprise” complete with Trey Anastasio reminding people to “buy the book or see the movie” if they wanted to get more out of the night. “We are The Phish from Vermont,” Anastasio joked as he and the band signed off for the night.

Watch the end of that encore below.
