After four years without a studio album, The Devil Makes Three have returned with their fourth full-length release. On the new effort, the California-based trio have replaced the down-home bluegrass sound that prevailed on 2009’s Do Wrong Right with a decidedly more modern blues and twangy country vibe. DM3 recorded at Dan Auerbach’s Nashville studio, and Pete Bernhard’s vocals and guitar work are soaked with The Black Keys’ blues-rock influence, as is immediately evident on the jaunty, catchy opening number, “Stranger.” The slower, fiddle and banjo-laden “A Moment’s Rest” is a highlight, as is “Forty Days,” a bouncy, old-timey song replete with a jazzy horn section. DM3 even save a final treat for the closing track: “Goodbye Old Friends,” a downright lovely folk tune. The band’s ability to weave between these various styles with ease makes for an intriguing, satisfying listening experience, and here’s to hoping that it’s not another four years before the next one.
