The Chicago Cubs Have Called on Eddie Vedder as Their Playoff Savior

Rob Slater on October 7, 2015

The Chicago Cubs last notched a playoff victory in Game 4 of the 2003 NLCS against the Florida Marlins. After that, they would lose the next three games, blame it all on some poor soul who reached for a foul ball, and would sink back into obscurity for the next decade. They have been swept with relative ease the two times they’ve made the playoffs since, but tonight they have a chance to erase all of that with a win against the Pirates in the NL Wild Card Game. The premise is simple: Win and you’re in. Lose and you’re done.

Musically speaking, the Cubs have quite the following. The most vocal come in the form of the likes of members Umphrey’s McGee (who have their own impressive Wrigley Field pedigree) as well as Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder. In fact, the Pearl Jam frontman is on hand in person tonight in Pittsburgh, probably delivering the pregame speech. Below is Vedder hanging out with Theo Epstein in the dugout before the game. Vedder’s Cubs fandom goes deep, as he famously brought out the late, great Ernie Banks on stage during Pearl Jam’s show at Wrigley. He then debuted his new ode to the Cubs’ eventual World Series run, “All the Way.”

Look at Theo, lovingly gazing at his newest World Series hope. Cubs and Pirates square off tonight from Pittsburgh.
