Terry Dolan’s Lost Gem (with Nicky Hopkins, Pete Sears, John Cipollina, The Pointer Sisters)

November 2, 2016

On November 25, High Moon Records will issue Terry Dolan’s self-titled album. This record is a long time coming as Dolan recorded it in 1972 and Warner Bros. scheduled it for a February 1973 release. The label scheduled a photo shoot with celebrated photographer Herb Greene (some of these images appear above) and all seemed quite promising. However, just two months before this could take place, Warner Bros. reversed course and cancelled the album. Since then only a limited number of people have heard it since.

Dolan is joined by stellar crew of collaborators on the record. Rolling Stones tour pianist Nicky Hopkins produce the first side before he was called away for Stones dates. Pete Sears (Jerry Garcia, Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna) then stepped in to produce. The roster of musicians includes Neil Schon (Journey, Santana), John Cipollina of Quicksilver Messenger Service, Journey’s Prairie Prince (The Tubes, Journey, Todd Rundgren) and Lonnie Turner and Greg Douglass of The Steve Miller Band. The Pointer Sisters contributed backing vocals.

Terry Dolan went on to form Bay Area stalwarts Terry & The Pirates but the record was never released in his lifetime (Dolan passed away on January 15, 2012).  David Fricke refers to the album as “a historic gem,” and today we’ll thrilled to premiere “Rainbow” from Terry Dolan.
