Sturgill Simpson Celebrated His Grammy Nomination with Pancakes and ‘Sesame Street’

December 7, 2016

Yesterday, we told you about Sturgill Simpson’s incredible Twitter account in light of his Album of the Year nomination at the Grammys. Today, Simpson chatted briefly with the New York Times about his reaction to the news.

Upon receiving a call from his publicist at 7:30 in the morning, Simpson’s wife said, “Who the [expletive] is calling you at 7:30?” When he received the news, Simpson called it “extremely humbling,” adding that he stayed in bed for a while to process the news. “I went downstairs and made pancakes and watched ‘Sesame Street’ with my son. That was pretty much it.”

Simpson also praised his fellow nominees in the category, saying he “loved” Beyonce’s Lemonade as well as Adele’s 25. “I really, really wish, honestly and no bullshit–I would’ve liked to see Frank Ocean’s name where mine is,” he also added about Ocean’s latest Blonde. “I just thought that record was really groundbreaking.”

He also added that while he was planning on taking 2017 completely off (Simpson and his wife are expecting their second child in February), that might not be possible now. “It might be a good idea to go play some shows again, I don’t know, given how many millions of people are saying, ‘Who the [expletive] is Sturgill Simpson?’ as of this morning.”
