Spinal Tap’s Derek Smalls Teams up With Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith for New Music Video

As we enthusiastically reported earlier this year, Derek Smalls, the bassist for legendary rockers Spinal Tap (or, if you prefer, the character played by Harry Shearer in 1984 mockumentary This is Spinal Tap), will release his debut solo album, Smalls Change, Meditations on Ageing, next month on April 13. Now, the veteran rock star has shared a brand new video for album track “It Don’t Get Old.”

The video and song feature help from Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith (in a wig) and Keith Richards guitarist Waddy Wachtel (not in a wig), and apparently the tune also features Peter Frampton on guitar and backing vocals, according to the album’s original announcement.

The song itself is a send-up of classic-rock touring culture, with lyrics like “Hanging backstage after the show/ Surrounded by people that we don’t know” and a reference to signing a deal with the devil (whose signature is apparently a nicely written “Satan”). Appropriately, Smalls collapses at the end of the video—into a chair placed behind him by a loyal roadie, of course.
