Song Premiere: Sunny Ozell “Come Back Baby” (with Bonus Video)

March 23, 2016

Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter Sunny Ozell explores a range of music on her album Take It with Me, which is set for release on April 1. Ozell explores blues, jazz, classic country, gospel and roots music through her robust interpretations of classics and new originals. Today we premiere Ozell’s take on Ray Charles’ “Come Back Baby,” which is a bonus track on the record. In addition we’re posting a live version of the song recorded at City Winery.

Ozell tells Relix, “At around 19, while I was living in Boulder, CO, I realized that I didn’t want to study classical voice training anymore, and so I pursued the complete opposite and joined a blues band. The guys were all more than twice my age and it was a great education. At the time I was also listening to Aretha pretty heavily, and she covered this Ray Charles tune and it’s always been a favorite. All my current bandmates also have history in blues bands, so I think it was a no-brainer for us to include ‘Come Back Baby’ on our record.”
