Song Premiere: Paper Bird “To The Light”

August 18, 2016

Colorado six-piece Paper Bird will release their new eponymous record on September. John Oates produced Paper Bird with David Kalmusky at Addiction Sound Studios in Nashville. Earlier this year Oates identified the group as one of the artists to look out for in 2016. The album is currently available for pre-order and today we premiere “To The Light” from the forthcoming record.

Paper Bird guitarist Paul DeHaven tells Relix, “‘To the Light’ is written from the perspective of Death. The Narrator alternates between something like the grim reaper, beckoning to come lay down in the green pastures on the other side, and the first person of the singer (Sarah), or someone who is challenged by the daily grind, the mundaneness of life, inevitable mortality, is being broken down, but is not willing to give up. She’s got things to do yet. I love the opening lines as the opening of the record: ‘falling to the pavement ‘cause your legs won’t work no more/ and you feel like you’ve been through this before.’ It sets a tone of cyclical weariness, exhaustion, and challenge which I think doing anything for 10 years+ will make you feel from time to time, especially looking at the last 3 years between ROOMS and now. It lets you know it is not going to be an easy record. But the chorus gives an assertion of hopefulness which we tend to be unable to avoid.”

Paper Bird will support the album with a national tour and their upcoming tour dates appear below the stream.
