Song Premiere: Hard Proof “Stinger”

November 23, 2016

On January 13th, 2017 Modern Outsider Records will release the new studio album from Austin-based ten-piece Hard Proof . Chris “Frenchie” Smith (Built to Spill, Meat Puppets, the Toadies) produced Stinger , in which Hard Proof continues to expand on a brassy-inufused palette of sounds that draws on Fela Kuti’s Africa 70 band, along with the jazz and funk of sub-Saharan Africa. The group came together in 2008, drawing in members of Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, The Calm Blue Sea, Cougar, Ocote Soul Sounds, the Echocentrics, and other area acts.

Today we premiere the title track from the forthcoming record. The band tells Relix, “”Our baritone saxophonist Joseph Woullard brought this song in, and as often goes with his tunes, it read right down and felt really good out of the gate. The hard funk vibe of the tune lent itself well to producer Frenchie Smith’s rock leanings, and he encouraged distorted guitars and a screaming bari solo. While we can’t really say for sure where the title came from, if you follow the clues in the album art you might get the reference.”

The group’s upcoming tour dates appear below the stream.
