Ryan Adams Talks Smoking a Joint with Keith Richards, Why History Was Wrong on Whiskeytown, Phil Lesh & Friends on ‘WTF Podcast’

February 13, 2017

Ryan Adams will release his 19th album, Prisoner, on Friday and he’s starting the week with a fresh new appearance on Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast where he and the comedian engage in a sprawling conversation that covers everything from addiction and Whiskeytown’s dissolution to playing with Phil Lesh & Friends, smoking a joint with Keith Richards and much more.

Adams recounts a particularly hilarious story early on about Keith Richards passing him a joint when he was younger, and the feeling of time standing still as he realized that one of his heroes was indeed passing him a joint. The conversation then shifts to Adams’ days with Whiskeytown and a deep dive into his family history as well. He explains that “history is wrong” about one of his first notable projects, saying it was largely not all that successful.

The wide-ranging conversation also touches on his time with Phil Lesh, including a particularly memorable moment while playing “Wharf Rat” (which Adams has covered recently) as well as his close relationship with his grandparents and what’s to come on his new record.
