Revisiting That Time Umphrey’s McGee Went Joel-Less in Arizona

January 26, 2017

Umphrey’s McGee will go without their guitar wizard Jake Cinninger for the week as he is out with the flu, an epidemic that apparently strikes even the most immortal of us, like Cinninger.

This isn’t the first time UM has had to go on without a core member, as the most recent happened in 2010 (Yes, Ryan Stasik missed the 2013 slot at Camp Bisco, but the band enlisted fill-ins Marc Brownstein, David Murphy and Bryan Doherty) in Flagstaff, AZ as Joel Cummins was stranded elsewhere in the country, or got caught in a Twitter fight somewhere causing him to forget about the show.

UM soldiered on that night in January, even having to survive a power outage during “2×2” early on in the show. Throughout the night, Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger took turns on various keyboard setups around the stage, playing on tunes like “Made to Measure,” “Sociable Jimmy,” “In the Kitchen” and “Got Your Milk (Right Here).”

The show inspired a short YouTube video from the stage which featured a zillion small keyboard setups in Cummins’ honor, as well as vocal samples so he was never too far away.
