Revisiting Phish’s Brief “In a Hole” Revival at Dick’s 2014

August 2, 2017

Phish’s “hole” night will serve up donut holes but also a weird collection of potential covers (“Head Like a Hole”? Hole?) and originals including the long lost “In a Hole,” not played since 1989 and briefly referenced during the band’s 2014 encore at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

The encore that night consisted of “The Horse” and “Silent in the Morning” along with the concluding “Fluffhead.” The first two completed a tour-long joke with the band playing “Silent in the Morning” consistently without “The Horse.” On this night, they did “Horse” and faked like that would be the end of the show, then addressing the obvious joke.

That discussion led to a mention of “In a Hole” and although the song wasn’t played (Anastasio mentioned he didn’t remember all the lyrics) but Jon Fishman and Page McConnell played a snippet of the chorus before mentioning the song is “just as funny as it was 30 years ago.”
