On July 20, 1969, NASA’s Apollo 11 touched down on the surface of the moon. Neil Armstrong uttered the phrase, “The Eagle has landed,” and history was made.
The three-man crew of Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin and Michael Collins became the first humans to walk the lunar surface, and in turn, capture the imagination of the American public and the world at large.
On the 49th anniversary of this momentous occasion, we at Relix are celebrating the only way we know how: with the Grateful Dead.
Below, give a listen to one of The Dead’s most cosmic tunes (besides “Dark Star,” of course).
This “Standing On The Moon” dates back to July 7, 1989, at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, and as you reflect on how small we are in this vast universe, remember Armstrong’s words from the great beyond: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
