Musicians React to Las Vegas Shooting on Social Media

October 2, 2017

Last night during the final evening of Las Vegas’ Route 91 Harvest Festival,
a shooter opened fire on the crowd of over 20,000 music fans from a hotel window across the street, a horrific act which has resulted in 58 confirmed deaths and hundreds more injured, the worst mass shooting in United States history.

The music world mourns the tragedy and the loss of life, and many musicians have taken to social media to express their condolences. “No words. Just grief, sadness, and the never-ending attempt to make sense of something utterly senseless,” John Mayer writes. Others, like The National’s Aaron Dessner, are calling for gun law changes. “Horrified and numbed by the heinous mass violence in Las Vegas,” Dessner writes. “How many more times before there is policy change?”

Jason Aldean, the artist who was on stage when the shots began raining down on the crowd on the Vegas strip, posted an image of the city on his Instagram with the words “Pray for Las Vegas” and a caption that reads, “Tonight has been beyond horrific. I still don’t know what to say but wanted to let everyone know that Me and my Crew are safe. My Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved tonight. It hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who was just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night.”
