The National will return with Sleep Well Beast, a new record four years in the making as the band looks to follow up 2013’s stellar Trouble Will Find Me. 

The first song from that record is available to stream below as the band presents “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness,” a brooding, frenetic song with a couple of instrumental breaks at various points. 

Guitarist Aaron Dessner led the production on Sleep Well Beast, as brother Bryce Dessner and frontman Matt Berninger contributed additional production. Peter Katis, who has worked with The National on every record beginning with 2003’s Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers, finished the mix of the album due out September 8.
