Listen: Mumford & Sons Unveil New Electric Sound with “Believe”

The new Mumford & Sons is finally here, with their arena-folk sound traded in for all-out stadium rock and roll as the group shifts to a more electric-oriented sound.

The first single, “Believe,” doesn’t stray too far from the Mumford blueprint (the only noticeable absence being the signature banjo sound and the noteworthy addition a more pronounced drum track) but hints at early Coldplay through the mood of the song and production.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Marcus Mumford credits a session at The National guitarist’s Aaron Dessner’s studio for the discovery of their new electric sound. “it was really as a result of that song that we went away knowing that we’d come back to a certain sound. It didn’t feel like a huge departure in some way, you know? It felt kind of natural to us. It sounds kind of like a jolt or something, but for us it was just where we were headed.”
