John Mayer Expertly Dives Into the Guitar Work of the Grateful Dead at NAMM

February 7, 2017

Although he’s ramping up for the release of his new solo album The Search for Everything, John Mayer is still in Grateful Dead-mode especially at Anaheim’s NAMM last month where he made an appearance and took some questions, including his favorite Dead tune to play with Dead & Company which triggered a full-on dive into the band’s guitar work.

“I could do that all day,” he says as he strums the opening chords to “He’s Gone.” “So much swing is implied in that riff and you have to play it with the implied swing.”

Mayer then moves on to “They Love Each Other,” admitting, “I’m just thinking about Jerry every time I play it. I factor him into me or me into him or something.” He adds, “There’s not a second that goes by where I’m not thinking, ‘Is this alright, Jerry?'”
