John Mayer and Scott Rogowsky Had a Wonderfully, Awkwardly Fun Time on HQ

Even if you’re not a regular user of the HQ Trivia app, which gives thousands of fans worldwide the chance to win a small amount of money but a large amount of bragging rights, you may have heard about John Mayer’s planned appearance on the Sunday night broadcast, or at least of host Scott Rogowsky’s noted fandom of Phish and jambands. And with Mayer in town with Dead & Company for a two-night run in Queens, Rogowsky and HQ got themselves a top-notch co-host last night, with Mayer of course being introduced as Rogowsky’s father in honor of Father’s Day.

Both Rogowsky and Mayer are quite skilled at being silly on camera, and the partially scripted nature of HQ made for some choice moments in last night’s show, including a number of duets of Grateful Dead songs like”Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo,” “Bertha,” “Eyes of the World,” “Uncle John’s Band,” “Althea,” “New Minglewood Blues,” Truckin'” and more. Mayer, recently a master of self-effacing humor, took a Father’s Day shot at his own musical past, comparing “Your Body is a Wonderland” and “Daughters” before saying, “I wouldn’t recommend going back into the textual work of my lyrics. I’m a one-time pop star.”

The real fun began after the quiz’s 12 questions were up,  when Mayer and Rogowsky’s banter seemed to loosen a bit, starting with Mayer teaching the HQ host how to do the John Mayer look from his recent “New Light,” explaining that the key is to look “just a little dumbfounded.” Rogowsky’s real father then comes on the scene for some slightly awkward scripted lines and a trio performance of Neil Young’s “Old Man,” with Rogowsky showing off some acoustic guitar skills. Mayer gets in one last great line, saying, “Oh, the whole thing, huh?” while Rogowsky continues the song and responds “You wouldn’t do it,” eliciting one of Mayer’s genuine chuckles.
