Today would’ve marked the 69th birthday of legendary R&B and soul singer Rick James, who passed away at the young age of 56 after heart failure. The night after his untimely death in 2004, Dave Matthews Band found themselves on stage at Alpine Valley playing a show that would later become immortalized as Live Trax Volume 8. 

Early on in the stellar show, DMB subbed out their usual “Anyone Seen the Bridge” interlude after “So Much to Say” for a quick run through James’ “Super Freak” led by Matthews and LeRoi Moore, delivering a wonderfully funk reading of the classic James tune.
