Gregg Allman Immortalized in Portrait Made with His Own Blood

Gregg Allman’s farewell album Southern Blood arrives tomorrow and the deluxe package will include a little something extra as Allman and daughter Layla Brooklym commissioned a portrait from surrealist Vincent Castiglia using Allman’s actual blood as well as the blood of his children.

As Yahoo Music reports, Castiglia says he was “completely blown away” by the opportunity to take on this project. “This is the single most important work I’ve ever painted, for two of the loveliest people I’ve had the opportunity to connect with in this life.”

“When Gregg shipped me the vials of his blood, no one could have foreseen what was to come–that ultimately the painting wouldn’t be created until after his passing,” he said.

The finished product, above, was “one of the most emotively intense experiences” for Castiglia.
