Father John Misty, a.k.a. Josh Tillman, won a Grammy for Best Recording Package for his album Pure Comedy at this past Sunday’s award ceremony (actually he tied), but the singer-songwriter-shit-talker wasn’t onhand in New York to accept the award (Tillman had a good reason—he was on tour in Australia—but no one would’ve been surprised if he’d skipped even if he was in a bar across from Madison Square Garden). Lucky for us, he gave his acceptance speech earlier today at his performance in Sydney.

In typical FJM fashion, Tillman opted for a humorous take on the award-acceptance speech, while spouting words that might make you wonder whether he was really kidding or not.  “Thanks, I don’t have a whole lot of time. God, uh—I just want to say, fuck society,” TIllman said with feigned awe at his big win. “I want to say that this government is a criminal organization. Uh—FlatEarth.com, go check that out.”

The singer continued with what might actually be closer to his actual beliefs on the subject: “You know, when I was growing up, everyone—mom, dad, the church, schoolteacher—told me that it’s what’s on the inside that matters, and I think this is really evidence of the fact that it’s what’s outside that matters.”
