Widespread Panic have been doing the thing for over three decades, so it’s safe to say that bassist Dave Schools probably has a plethora of choice throwback photos at his disposal, and Schools has been rolling out some gold via his Instagram over the past few days. 

The reminiscing started with a snapshot from the back of Panic’s tour bus during the second H.O.R.D.E. tour in the early ’90s, showing drummer Todd Nance and keyboardist John “JoJo” Hermann playing Nintendo with the late Col. Bruce Hampton (“Most likely some golf game or maybe baseball,” Schools notes). 

Next up was a photo featuring Schools himself posing with Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman and two of their late bandmates, former Salmon banjoist Mark Vann and former Panic guitarist Michael Houser.

Actress Laura Dern (who happens to appear in the just-released new Star Wars movie), makes a surprise appearance in a photo taken after shooting wrapped for Panic’s 1997 music video for “Aunt Avis,” in which Dern starred (the video was directed by her then-partner Billy Bob Thornton). 

The biggest throwback of the batch so far is this photo from March 1987 showing an early quartet iteration of Widespread Panice, back when they were just John Bell, Schools, Nance and Houser. Schools warmly remembers the less-than-ideal venue where they played, which offered them free barbecue but maybe not the best of safetly standards.

The highlight of the throwback collection may have come earlier today, however, with this appropriately blurry shot of Houser jamming with Phish frontman Trey Anastasio during the latter’s sit in at LA’s Roxy in November 1993 (Phish were in town recording their album Hoist). “These two got along great and whenever a jam occurred it was magic,” Schools writes of the two guitarists.

The bassist notes that Phish keyboardist Page McConnell was also on hand for the collaboration, which saw the musicians start the encore with a jam on Professor Longhair before moving into Traffic’s “Low Spark of High Heeled Boys” and Panic’s own “Time Is Free.” Schools mentions that Anastasio is playing a guitar that Bell gifted to him before recalling a story of meeting his biological father and his family for the first time that night.
