Dave Matthews Performs, Makes Fun of Himself for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts

This morning, NPR released the video for their latest Tiny Dest Concert, which featured a solo acoustic performance from Dave Matthews, who’s currently on tour with his band in support of their new album Come Tomorrow

As the description of the video notes, Matthews’ wasn’t a typical Tiny Desk gig, as the energetic frontman played more songs than most behind the desk and filled the space between songs with his signature goofy banter. Though apparently not all of it could fit into a reasonable NPR video release, they did leave in Matthews making fun of his own emotive singing style and various faces he makes, joking that “some alien’s gonna shoot out of my chest one day—won’t that be a surprise,” along with him mentioning his government-sanctioned trip to Havana, Cuba, last year that turned into more of a party, plus an incredible string of onomatopoeia the Matthews offers to describe the power of the band members he usually has behind him compared to just him with an acoustic guitar.

Oh, and he also plays some songs—and plays them well, for that matter. Matthews jokes that he’s not used to performing by himself like this, but the raw power with which he imbues these tunes—even in a strange office setting—seems to belie that statement. Matthews runs through Come Tomorrow tracks “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)” and “Here On Out,” moves to “Don’t Drink the Water” off of 1998’s Before These Crowded Streets and “Mercy” from 2012’s Away From the World, then closes with “So Damn Lucky” from his 2003 solo album Some Devil
