Covering Relix: I Know You Rider with Les Kippel (September_October 1975)
Our special 40th anniversary issue of Relix includes Relix founder Les Kippel’s look back at some of the magazine’s covers. Here’s what he has to say about Vol. 2 No. 5 from September_October 1975. In last month’s installment of Covering Relix, Les spoke about the premiere issue.
I KNOW YOU RIDER– Vol. 2, No. 5. A new wave of inspiration set on us as we tried to translate Grateful Dead songs into imagery—something that was a new concept. This issue tied in the words from “I Know You Rider:” “I wish I was a headlight on a northbound train/I’d shine my light through the cool Colorado rain.” Gary added a homage to a favorite local band by labeling the train Sundance Express. This was also the first time anywhere that [future Grateful Dead archivist] Dick Latvala came out as a tape collecting Deadhead, with his letter to the editor about his thoughts on collecting. Remember, this was 1975 and Dick was living in Pahoa, Hawaii!
