Bob Weir Goes Record Shopping at Amoeba Music

July 4, 2017

Bob Weir took part in Amoeba Music’s “What’s In My Bag?” series where a musician scours the bins at the famed record store and talks about what they took home from their shopping spree.

For his part, Weir picked up Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, calling it a “classic record” from the iconic musician. “He changed everything,” Weir said.

From there, it was onto a more present-day selection in Wilco’s new album Schmilco (“A real solid American band”), Howlin’ Wolf’s Blues from Hell, Taj Mahal’s Sacred Island (which Weir admitted he hadn’t heard yet) and one of his favorite Beatles albums Rubber Soul. “This is the year I think they might have been dabbling with LSD a little bit,” he said.

Bessie Smith’s essential collection popped onto Weir’s radar thanks to a recent show at Sweetwater Music Hall while John Coltrane’s Africa/Brass record served as his introduction to the iconic jazz artist. Weir also picked out Coltrane’s self-titled record, admitting he stole chord progressions from the album. “And I’ll continue to,” he said.
