21 Years Ago Today: Dave Matthews Band and Phish Collaborate on “The Maker”

October 15, 2015

While their collaborations were few and far apart, when Phish and Dave Matthews Band did get together, they flexed the collective muscle that made both bands two of the finest live acts for what would turn out to be decades. Twenty one years ago today, Phish welcomed out a bunch of young punks from Charlottesville, VA fresh off their first major label release to jam on “The Maker” during the encore of their Pelham, AL stop in the fall of 1994.

The Daniel Lanois tune is a staple in the DMB world, as it has been included in the repertoire of every Dave Matthews project. This however was the first (and only) time Phish would play the song, which is preceded on this night by a drum jam between two of the baddest in the game–Jon Fishman and Carter Beauford.
