“Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide” Just May be Trey’s Finest Vocal Performance

You’ve seen the comments, you probably have the friends and detractors who tell you Phish is unlistenable because they can’t sing. Sure, Phish’s vocal prowess isn’t their main draw, but they masterfully tailor their songs to fit their abilities. Nobody is sitting here calling Trey, Mike, Page and Fish crooners.

But last night, as the band’s performance of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars was wrapping up with the emotional finale “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide,” Trey Anastasio took the mic and stood alone in the front of the stage, delivering what just very well may be the finest vocal performance of his life. The emotion as he details Ziggy’s last act, as a rock and roll washout, is unparalleled in the set. He even drops a Tiger Woods fist pump at the climax of the song.

Maybe the gravity of the moment finally sunk in, that Bowie is actually gone, delivering his final act earlier this year. “We always set the bar high,” Anastasio told David Fricke in the evening’s official program. “But Ziggy is so seminal. Bowie is riding on the shoulders of the giants that came before–then pushing everything forward.”

This is what nailing it looks like. Watch the full performance below.
