Goodbye _Parks & Recreation_: Revisiting the Show’s Best Musical References

Rob Slater on January 13, 2015

Tonight marks the beginning of the final season of Parks & Recreation. That means in a matter of weeks there will be no more Ron Swanson, Leslie Knope, Tom Haverford, JJ’s Diner’s waffles or DJ Roomba. All things Pawnee will be gone. Don’t cry, as that’s only allowed at funerals and the Grand Canyon.

As sad as this all may be, Parks & Rec has had one hell of a run. Along with quick witted humor and an all-star cast, music has also found a constant home in the show’s fabric with Chris Pratt’s character Andy Dwyer serving as frontman of local rock outfit Mouse Rat (or Rat Mouse, Department of Homeland Obscurity, Nothing Rhymes with Orange, Rad Wagon, etc.) and constantly professing his love of Dave Matthews. Dwyer also owns a shirt he once tackled Eddie Vedder in–it’s practically priceless. With the rock world covered, Ron Swanson moonlights as jazz sax player/sex symbol Duke Silver in rival town Eagleton while Tom Haverford doesn’t listen to anything that isn’t auto-tuned–especially The Lumineers.

Music is woven deep into the show that ranks as one of NBC’s finest ever. Take a look/listen at some of the show’s funniest and best musical references and moments.

Dave Matthews Band

Two of our favorites here at Relix, Dave Matthews Band and Phish, rank as the two with the most connection to the show. On the DMB side, Andy Dwyer (Chris Pratt) references Dave several times, including him in his “ideal bachelor party” which includes the duo playing sixty hours of Golden Tee. Pratt said previously he’d like Dave to guest on the show, but unfortunately that never happened….yet.

In this clip, Rob Lowe’s character hits an emotional low and is leveled out by Andy and April by the use of DMB.

Phish

Show writer Harris Wittels doesn’t hide his love for Phish. As half of the Analyze Phish podcast, Wittels has been seeing the band since 1999 and in turn injected some of the funny and often ridiculous stereotypes of a Phish fan into the show. As sweet, innocent Ann looks for a date on Valentine’s day, Wittels makes an appearance as the guy who still lives with his parents and vies to be her manpiece.

The funny Wittels wrote this piece for Relix earlier this year and also spoke to us in 2013 about his fandom.

Pawnee/Eagleton Unity Concert with Jeff Tweedy, The Decemberists and Yo La Tengo

The most on-point musical moment of the entire series came at the Pawnee/Eagleton Unity Concert. The show enlisted help from the likes of Jeff Tweedy, The Decemberists, Yo La Tengo, Ginuwine (Donna Meagle’s cousin) and more for a finale for the ages. Tweedy had previously appeared as the frontman for Pawnee legends Land Ho! and reunited the group for this special show. Yo La Tengo stole the show as “Bobby Knight Ranger,” a Night Ranger cover band dressed as Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight. Naturally, they performed “Sister Christian” over and over again.

The show closed with a full sing-along ode to Lil’ Sebastian, the p̶o̶n̶y̶ little horse with an honorary degree from Notre Dame who previously died. Joining the fold was local rockers Mouse Rat and yes, Duke Silver even revealed himself to everyone.

Daft Punk and The Lumineers

Daft Punk craze swept through Pawnee in 2014 as Aziz Ansari’s character Tom turned into DJ Rumbodrop with the help of one of the iconic helmets from the aforementioned French electronic duo.

In the same episode, as Tom readies for his DJ gig, he describes how he picks the music he likes. No, The Lumineers don’t fall under the “banger” category.

Neutral Milk Hotel

Pro Tip: Never turn against your rock star significant other. During a test run for Tom’s new “Know Your Boo” game, which is totally not the Newlywed Game, April and Andy fight over her love for the Neutral Milk Hotel after she says she would sleep with Jeff Mangum. April also routinely references her love for The Smiths, nearly driving her Venezuelan boyfriend to depression earlier in the series.

“Catch Your Dream”

The centerpiece of the last three seasons has been Leslie Knope’s campaign (and eventual win) for City Council. To kick off the tour, Mouse Rat came up with “Catch Your Dream,” an overly cheesy, Springsteen-y tune about seizing the day and all that feel-good BS. For those who have seen it, the studio scene is hysterical for many reasons but you also get a rare collaboration from Mouse Rat and Duke Silver along with the whole Parks cast.

Listen to the song above and let Duke play us out below.
