A Relix Conversation with Bill Kreutzmann and Benjy Eisen

June 23, 2015

The latest installment of our Relix Conversation series features Bill Kreutzmann and longtime Relix writer Benjy Eisen, who recently collaborated on founding Grateful Dead drummer’s new memoir, Deal. Click here to watch a Relix Conversation with Warren Haynes and John Scofield and click here to watch a Relix Conversation with Anders Osborne and Luther Dickinson.

In part one, Billy and Benjy discuss the new band Billy & The Kids. Billy also talks about seeing Jerry Garcia perform for the first time and why he is the “first Deadhead.”

In part two, Billy talks about his close friendship with John Belushi, who once did a cartwheel onstage with the Grateful Dead. Billy also reveals that he tripped for the first time with Dead scribe Robert Hunter.

In part three, Billy and Benjy trace of the origins of the new all-star Voodoo Dead project. The pair also discuss Billy’s own New Orleans roots.

In part four, Billy discusses the loose recording sessions that shaped Jerry Garcia’s proper solo debut with Benjy. He also talks about his relationship with the members of Phish and a gift Mike Gordon’s parents left him during a trip to Costa Rica.

In part five, Billy and Benjy talk about the Grateful Dead’s return to form in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, including the band’s collaborations with Branford Marsalis. Benjy recounts the time he introduced Billy to modern electronic music.
