Interesting to compare this to Mahalia Jackson. Both she and Matisyahu have taken grnees of contemporary music (blues and rap respectively) and brought them into the realm of the religious. While this has enabled Matisyahu to stand out in the rap world and given him a unique identity, I wonder what the response is in the Jewish world. Many criticized Jackson for bringing the devil’s music into the church. Today many view rap as the blues was viewed about a century ago. I wouldn’t doubt that Matisyahu has been hotly criticized for the direction of his music.
