Wild Child: Fools

J. Poet on December 2, 2015

Wild Child coalesced around the talents of fiddler Kelsey Wilson and ukulele player Alexander Beggins. They met in the back of a tour van; they were playing in the backing band of a singer-songwriter. Neither had ever sung or written songs before, but as the tour went on, they discovered a natural affinity for the craft of songwriting. Since both were shy, they invited friends to share the stage with them when they started performing. Those informal gatherings led to the formation of Wild Child, a collective with an eclectic approach to performing and arranging. “Bad Girl” rides a Motown-inspired backbeat with Matt Bradshaw’s trumpet stabs and Wilson’s vocal suggesting The Supremes gone country. Beggins’ simple ukulele strumming and Wilson’s yearning vocal give “Meadows” a gentle folk feel until the band comes stomping in on the last chorus to underline the song’s message of self-destructive love. Wilson and Beggins share lead duties on “Stones,” singing playful lyrics full of internal rhymes, jazzy rhythms and witty wordplay. The lighthearted vocals and bouncy cello-infused rhythm contrast nicely with the tune’s underlying theme of lovers who find themselves unable to walk away from a relationship they both know is over.
