Various Artists: The Space Project

by Richard Gehr on April 30, 2014

“If you want a rocket ship, I will be a rocket ship for you,” croons J. Spaceman of Spiritualized on “Always Forgetting with You,” one of 14 Space Project () tracks that, to greater or lesser extent, sample electromagnetic radiation fluctuations registered by the Voyager probes. Space turns out to be the place where indie niche acts like The Antlers (“Jupiter”), Youth Lagoon (“Worms) and Beach House (“Saturn”) leave their usual earthly concerns behind and achieve refreshingly experimental liftoff. The zaps, bleeps, blips and assorted aural space junk captured by the Voyager hover in the background, mostly. Take your protein pill, put your helmet on and dig these now sounds of cosmic detritus.
