Ty Segall: Manipulator

Richard Gehr on September 29, 2014

“Tall Man, Skinny Lady,” “The Faker,” “Connection Man,” “Susie Thumb,” “The Crawler”: There’s a colorful cast of slightly fucked-up characters at the core of Manipulator, the latest fresh-faced blast from the past by prolific California touraholic Ty Segall. Each of them comes neatly delivered in a slickly nostalgic package of layered guitars, faux-Brit falsetto vocals and one memorably fuzzed-out solo after another. Each track might have been a nugget from Lenny Kaye’s influential 1972 collection, and each is as disposably precious. Like all perfect pop, Segall’s music extends Whoppers to the starving.
