The Velvet Teen: All Is Illusory

J. Poet on August 3, 2015

The Velvet Teen have already incorporated electronica, jazz, ‘60s pop and EDM into their ever-expanding sound. On Illusory, they add elements of classical music, prog rock, thrash and industrial noise to augment their catchy melodies and cryptic lyrics. The music is aggressive, but most of the time, the mix condenses the individual voices—vocal and instrumental—into a vague, pulsating throb. “Taken Over” starts quietly with acoustic guitar and ambient bass, but it’s still hard to decipher Judah Nagler’s processed vocals. About halfway through the track’s 10 minutes, there’s a rush of symphonic synthesizers as drummer Casey Deitz attacks his kit to break the time into scattered fragments. “Eclipses” and “You Were the First” bristle with the energy of early punk; “The Giving In” has a taste of U2’s anthemic overkill, and “The Veil Between” has beautiful, almost-classical piano work and a gorgeous melody.
