The Growlers: Chinese Fountain

Step into the way-back machine and join The Growlers on their time trip through the ‘60s acid-pop experiment, where musical styles blurred with often unexpectedly spectacular results. This Costa Mesa, Calif., band skirts through vintage reverb-heavy surf riffs, edgy rockabilly, swirly psychedelia, spaghetti western hypnosis, and buoyant Eastern European folk, all topped with a hook-inducing sprinkle of bubblegum pop. Add just enough modern accentuations—a little post-punk grit and a sometimes-dark lyrical edge—and the self-inflicted “Beach Goth” term almost works. Monikers can be limiting, however, especially when considering the layered depth of songs, such as the cinematic “Big Toe,” the lush, airy, organ-filled “Not The Man,” or the pre-alt-country vibe of “Black Memories.” Breathe deep—this time trip is worth taking.
