The Four Legged Faithful: Devoured in the Dark

The Four Legged Faithful do justice to old-school Americana with Devoured in the Dark, their follow-up to the 2011 LP Regret & Resolve. The record’s 11 tracks find the Massachusetts-based string band—Matthew Migliori (acoustic guitar and dobro), Jon Kaplan (mandolin), Nate Pelletier (banjo) and Joseph Pierog (upright bass)—showcasing their penchant for two-, three- and four-part harmonies, as well as their ability to move seamlessly between said harmonies and traditional fingerpicking jams. The album’s best tracks are the ones that play out in that vein, swinging between slow-paced, usually heartfelt, vocal segments and faster breaks. Tracks like “Here We Are” take the patient, slow-building route, while “Kal-El” comes out of the gate racing before taking things down a notch. “Birds” and “One,” on the other hand, reveal a degree of compositional complexity with their multitude of twists and turns. None of it is particularly groundbreaking, but it is a solid addition to the folk catalog that isn’t weighed down by pop sensibilities.
