Stars: No One Is Lost

Stars’ dulcet indie-rock songs are always at their most compelling when singers Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan join their voices. When this happens, the Canadian group, who recorded their new album No One Is Lost in Montreal, finds a whole greater than its parts—one that balances itself with the fusing of male and female vocals. This album, the band’s seventh, opens with two songs that isolate Campbell and Millan individually and offer greater impact as its third, “You Keep Coming Up,” unites them. Overall, the songs are moody and emotionally heavy, the melodies slinking and soaring under the heartfelt
lyrics. The album is titled ironically and meant as an investigation of loss—and being lost yourself. In that way, it is both beautiful and sad, the heartbreak peering through each twinge of shimmering guitar. Perhaps that is why there is a comfort when Campbell and Millan sing together—in those moments, you know that no one is alone.
