Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings: Give The People What They Want

by Fady Khalil on January 14, 2014

It was Sharon Jones’ undeniable vocal talent that took her from being a background singer in a wedding band, to the central focus of her own wildly successful soul revival outfit. But it’s been her continual inspiration as an artist that’s allowed her to stay in that spotlight for over a decade now. On her fifth album, Give The People What They Want, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings do just that, crafting 10 new songs with nostalgic vibes in a perfect blend of talent and inspiration. Opener, “Retreat!” intros the album with a high-noon guitar strum that alludes to the fiery battles of the heart looming just ahead. But even heartbreak can be fun when wrapped in imaginative side-steppin’ grooves (“Long Time, Wrong Time”) and reinvented 60s-era rock (“Get Up and Get Out”). Jones closes the album crooning, “I’ve been waiting so long” (“Slow Down Love”); the wait is over.
