Saun & Starr: Look Closer

Saundra Williams and Starr Duncan worked in a Sharon Jones-helmed wedding band and, more recently, sang backup in her soul outfit The Dap-Kings as The Dapettes. On their first album as Saun & Starr, the veteran singers show off their amazing vocal chops on this quietly incendiary, soulfully funky album with the help of their Dap-King collaborators. They sing together, trading lead vocals and blending their voices in gritty gospel-flavored harmonies on “Look Closer,” a smooth percussion track reminiscent of KC & the Sunshine Band that delivers a warm seductive message. They go to Memphis, Tenn. for the swinging Hi/Stax funk of “Blah Blah Blah”—a witty putdown of a guy that’s talking loud and saying nothing. “Gonna Make Time” is a late-night grove that gives Saun & Starr a chance to show off their smoldering passion on a love song, while “Big Wheel” is another jab at a loudmouth that’s spiked by sharp horn stabs and even sharper vocals.
