Martin Sexton’s reputation as a tireless troubadour is further affirmed by the title of this, his eighth album overall and first in nearly five years. Inspired by the battered cassettes and shared CDs played repeatedly while on the road, Sexton created a sampler of sorts to recreate those varying moods and shifting locales. In truth, the album keeps a general consistency—a breezy, affable sound that resides midway between the old-school charm of James Taylor and the spunk and swagger of a young John Mayer. Nevertheless, the pluck, strum and croon of “Do It Daily,” the seductive sway of “You (My Mind Is Woo)” and the casual, carefree “Doin’ Something Right” reflect Sexton’s signature style. Even occasional variations—the vintage-sounding “Dandelion Days” and the bluesy “Give It Up”—don’t disrupt the mood. Ultimately, Mixtape of the Open Road stays on track, providing a jovial journey all its own.
