Major Lazer: Peace Is the Mission

With the third Major Lazer LP, Peace Is the Mission, Diplo’s EDM-dancehall project teeters closer toward mainstream electro-pop. The producer hasn’t lost his genre-splicing finesse: These nine tracks seamlessly weave dubby rhythms and monster bass drops with hip-hop and R&B hooks—a style that hasn’t worn thin. But he’s sanded off some of the rough edges, resulting in a couple formulaic tracks, like the midtempo soul jam “Powerful” (featuring a guest hook from Ellie Goulding) and “Be Together,” which suffers from Wild Belle’s obnoxious lounge-jazz crooning. The beat-maker saves his grittiest, most hypnotic beat for “Night Riders,” a Jamaican-rap pile driver filled with ricocheting percussion and hilarious boasts. “Got a guest bedroom filled up with fur coats,” 2 Chainz raps. “Ain’t no room in this bitch to even jump rope.” Diplo is the most influential electronic hit-maker working today—a man who can collaborate with Madonna just as easily as he can with Usher, M.I.A. or Snoop Dogg. But he needs Major Lazer— weirdness, really, should be the mission.
