Lissie: Back To Forever

Justin Jacobs on October 30, 2013

On her second LP, Back To Forever, Lissie Maurus puts all of her talents on the table: a powerhouse voice that skips from airy and beautiful to booming and whipping in an instant; a knack for upfront classic-rock melodies; frank, lovelorn and universally relatable lyrics; and some great, cutting guitar work. With each release, she’s packaged herself differently. The 2009 EP Why You Runnin’ was gorgeous folk and Catching A Tiger was pop-rock at its finest. But Back To Forever drops Lissie onstage with Heart, or her vocal godmother, Stevie Nicks. That is, the album finds her stunning vocals in a mystic, sometimes heavy, ‘70s guitar-rock setting. This new, amplified Lissie works—some big, bold music to match her dramatic vocals. On “Further Away (Romance Police),” she’s a shimmering, mysterious Nicks disciple. And in lesser hands, the anti-celebrity, anti-image “Shameless” would be cheesy. For Lissie, it’s life or death. Justin Jacobs
