Though Leroy Justice may be the cheeky name of this contemporary band, it also alludes to an era when muscle cars marauded the streets and brawny rock and roll filled the airwaves. On their first release with major label distribution, the New York City quintet seems bent on taking listeners back to that time. Above The Weather is 10 tracks of quintessential classic rock, with gossamer fingerpicking ( “Up on the Mountain” ), wide open expanses ( “So Long” ), and blazing guitar solos ( “Blue Eyed Blues” ) reminiscent of a present day Led Zeppelin. But with his greater focus on storytelling and modern sensibilities, songwriter and lead vocalist Jason Gallagher more closely helms Leroy Justice somewhere nearer to Dawes and Delta Spirit. It’s classic rock for the modern day.
