Kopecky: Drug for the Modern Age

Lee Zimmerman on June 29, 2015

Never mind the fact that Kopecky’s sophomore set was meant to convey some sobering circumstances—the loss of a loved one from death or divorce, struggles with drugs and similar life-altering situations. Given its sonic sheen and sumptuous settings, it’s the edgy and effusive presentation that clearly matters most. The pumping rhythms and sweeping soundscapes create a veritable audio overflow—all pulsating tempos and airborne atmospherics that are rich with energy and euphoria. Consequently, any deeper meanings are difficult to discern. True, there’s something unmistakably compelling in the driving dynamics of songs like “Die Young,” “Real Life” and “Talk To Me,” titles that reflect the darker topics inherent in the original intent. Overall, however, it’s a more celebratory sound that’s evident here—even when the fractured arrangements of “Natural Selection” and “Quarterback” seem to steer things askew. Intoxicating at times, Drug for the Modern Age offers only a momentary high.
