Jorma Kaukonen: Ain’t in No Hurry

There’s a certain comfort that comes from listening to a new Jorma Kaukonen recording. From the first fingerpicked notes and sung words of the ancient “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out,” the lead track on Ain’t in No Hurry, there’s no doubt who this is—Kaukonen sounds virtually the same as he did back on that first acoustic Hot Tuna album. Yet, at the same time, this music is actually more befitting of the now 74-year-old musician than it was of his 30-year-old self—Kaukonen has constantly fine-tuned and honed, becoming one of the great elder statesmen of American roots music along the way. Here, whether digging into a decades-old blues or gospel, an Appalachian sing-along or one of his own compositions, Kaukonen and his crew— including producer Larry Campbell on numerous instruments—bring purity and honesty to every track. Extra kudos for the drastically rearranged take on “Bar Room Crystal Ball,” originally from Tuna’s Yellow Fever album and featuring none other than Jack Casady on bass. Even that sounds right at home here.
